GUIDELINES FOR HOSTING LASER DISTRICT 12 REGATTAS

Effective February 9, 2008

Introduction

These are the guidelines that Laser District 12 asks regatta hosts to use. The regatta may also be designated to awards points as a Grand Prix event with the North American Laser class. These guidelines are specific to D12 and are used in conjunction with the ILCA-NA region guidelines available on the North American Laser class website and the RRS 2005-2008 Appendixes K and L. Please do not hesitate to contact the District 12 secretary if there are questions about these guidelines.

A point of contact who is a member of the host club and D12 will act as liaison between the host club and D12. The point of contact is an experienced traveling D12 sailor who is familiar with D12 regattas. The point of contact provides the D12 secretary the NOR for the D12 website.

NOR- posted on D12 website as far in advance as possible.

SI’s-Judge’s review of SI’s is encouraged.

Courses-Windward-Leeward or Windward-Leeward-Triangle. A minimum of 5 races is encouraged, but 7 are better.

New in 2007-This was the first year awarding a 4.7 trophy. Following are some scenarios that a club may use (only suggestions during this first year) for starts and courses for the 4.7. 4.7’s may have a separate start, may have a separate windward mark or may have a shorter course such as one lap or any combination thereof and scored separately.

OTW judging is favored.

Scoring-Low Point Scoring System-Appendix A2 except as modified below:

After six races, a sailor may discard his/her worst score.

Results are to be computerized (recommended ZW software) and show overall position, sail #, first name, last name, results of individual races and total score. Junior (<19), female, open (19 -34), apprentice master (35-44), master (45-54), grand master (55-64)and great grand master (65 and older) shall be displayed next to individual’s name. It is the point of contact’s responsibility to send results in required format to D12 secretary.

Scoring should be rapid to allow travelers to hit the road. Use of RM sheets such as “Scoring errors that do not require protest hearing” is recommended.

Time Limits (Finish windows)- To avoid confusion when time limits are included in SI’s, the classes are determined by the NOR. If trophies are presented overall only, it would follow that all Laser standards and all Laser radials competing in the regatta are one class. If trophies are presented separately to the Laser Standard (Full) and the Laser Radials and Laser 4.7’s, there are three classes and time limits would apply accordingly to each class.

Example:

1st boat, a Laser standard finishes at 4:00. 20 minute finish window.

Radial 1 finishes at 4:15

Radial 2 finishes at 4:25

Radial 3 finishes at 4:30.

Laser 4.7 (1) finishes at 4:35

Laser 4.7 (2) finishes at 4:40.

If trophies are given overall only, Radial 2, Radial 3 and Laser 4.7 (1), Laser 4.7 (2) are scored DNF as all boats are in one fleet.

If trophies are given for Laser standard, Laser radial and Laser 4.7, Radial 2 and Radial 3 finished within the window of their fleet as did Laser 4.7 (1) and Laser 4.7 (2).

We strongly urge where it is possible for finish windows to be specific to each of the 3 Laser rigs..a finish window separate for Fulls, Radials and 4.7’s. It is at the discretion of each of our hosts to address this issue.

Registration-Standard form available on NA website. It is crucial to record birthdates of all sailors for trophy purposes.

Point of contact will provide at registration, available Laser class membership forms. Point of Contact will send to D12 Secretary the completed membership forms and checks for NA Laser Class.

Event Duration-2 days

Entry Fees-All regatta monies are collected by host club and are property of host club. Host club is encouraged to reduce entry fee for juniors, and college students. No t-shirt, lunches or breakfasts are required but are at the discretion of the host club and may or may not be part of their event. Setting early registration deadlines and amounts of late fee penalties (usually 10%) are acceptable.

A Saturday night dinner should be included, followed by a “winner’s circle”.

Prizes-Host should follow NA Guidelines for number. Trophies, clothing, gear, or other prize materials are choice of host club. There is to be verbal recognition of the first place in each of the master’s categories at the awards ceremony. Those categories are apprentice masters, masters, grand masters and great grand masters.

Safety Considerations-In addition to NA Guidelines, D12 asks that should water temperatures and /or wind chill be a safety consideration, that notice be provided to sailors as far in advance as possible. Host club may recommend wetsuits, drysuits, etc.

Host club will provide a “mini-clinic” lasting approximately 10 to 20 minutes, after skipper’s meeting or other available time and before launching. Typically the clinic is led by a knowledgeable Laser sailor.

Housing for juniors and college students is encouraged-first come first served.

Fri. afternoon tune-up or fun racing for early arrivals is encouraged.

Providing information on Fri night watering hole or good local eateries for early arrivals is encouraged.
