Results from the Radial Grand Prix & Wrightsville are Updated!

Posted by DSherwood on 15 Aug 2010 | Tagged as: News

Sorry it’s taken so long to get our scores updated, but our website program had one of those wonderful updates that has taken me a little while to learn.
I wasn’t able to make the Radial Grand Prix in Charleston, but from the looks of things we had a lot of new faces on the line! Congratulations to all the Radial sailors who participated and to Krysta Rohde for taking 1st place with all bullets!

Wrightsville Beach had another great turn out last weekend with 14 Radials and 36 Fulls taking on the Ocean. A frontal system worked through late in the week resulting in winds out of the east-northeast of 8-10. Lighter winds combined with swell from Tropical Storm Collin shook things up a bit. Congratulations to our 1st place winners Avery Fanning in the Radial fleet and Krysta Rohde in the Full fleet. Thanks to the Carolina Yacht Club, NC for hosting another outstanding regatta. A special thanks goes out to Sayra Sailing for donating some really cool give aways at the awards cermony. John you went overboard this year, but let me tell you I’m definatley loving my new Ronstan Regatta Watch!

O.K. on to our final D-12 Championship Event: Columbia Sailing Club September 25-26. If you havn’t been to this regatta, don’t miss out! D12 will hold it’s annual meeting on Saturday night, district awards ceremony will be Sunday following racing, and Cafe’ Douge’ will most likely be serving breakfast to the campers. To all of those great sailors who won perpetual trophies last year, make sure to get your trophies to this regatta!!! See CSC for more information.

Scores are in from Our 3rd Championship Regatta

While the weather put a damper on the Friday practice races it cleared off and left us with a great weekend of sailing.  Saturday with northwest winds ranging from 12-20 knots, the race committee ran 6 races.  Sunday provided more of the same conditions although a bit lighter and after 3 races we were back at the club by 12:30.  That’s right after 9 races total in great wind, sunny skys, good food and southern hospitality I don’t know what else anyone could have asked for!  Congrats to Eric Oetgen for taking 1st in the Full fleet after thowing out his only 2nd place finish.  In the Radial fleet congratulations is in order for both Joe David 1st and Windy Key 2nd with only one point seperating them.  Thanks to the Usher’s for hosting the Friday night low country boil, Pam for helping out with registration, Gifford for serving as PRO, and Rachael running a water boat.  J.T. Hughes was determined not to be left out, he helped with the boil and brought his father in from out of state to run his safety boat.  Thanks to all who helped put on this regatta and all of those who opened their houses to us out of town sailors.

Championship #3 June 5th-6th!

Posted by DSherwood on 21 May 2010 | Tagged as: News

District 12 showed up in force at the Master US Nationals!

Eric Oetgen was 1st Apprentice and second overall in the Standard rig and Glenn Walker was 1st Apprentice and 3rd overall in the radial rig.

Point wise Eric and Glenn would have won their fleets hands down if it had been scored as a regular regatta, but since it was a master regatta they both had to give 30pts to the great grand masters, 20 points to the grand masters and 10 points to the masters.  And to think some people say being young is an advantage.

I hope everyone is planning to attend our upcoming regatta in Savannah, GA.  This year we are trading in the boat yard for the Savannah Yacht Club, so don’t miss out.  For complete information see the  D12 SYC NOR 2010

Laser Masters US Championships

Jerry Callahan sent out the following instructions for those of us attending the regatta this week. I post it here because it has a lot of useful information. Good work Jerry.- CK

I want to welcome you to the US Championship in beautiful Charleston SC. The weather looks good (10kts plus a seabreeze)and water temps are in the 70s so dress accordingly. There are a few items I wanted to mention that might be helpful;
1) The nearest grocery store is the Harris Teeter on East Bay Street, which is about 1/2 mile from the Carolina YC
2) The nearest West Marine is about 4 miles away on Highway 17 South. Sayre Sailing (local Laser dealer) will have a trailer on the property from Thursday onwards. John Sayre’s cell number is 843 534 0560.
3) When you arrive, please try and park near the east or south side of the property, staying away from the green striped parking spaces, which are for members’ boats which are launched daily. If you can keep the area around the main clubhouse clear, that would be much appreciated by the social members. Please try and carpool and move boat trailers off the property if at all possible.
4) The Boathouse will be our base of sailing and social operations. The main club house will be reserved for members. The South clubhouse is will be where our Saturday night dinner will be held.
5) Those of you who have not paid please bring only cash or check.
6) The Boathouse will be open for competitors and their guests with a cash bar from 3PM daily starting Thursday and a dining menu starting at 5PM. There will be kegs of beer each afternoon during the regatta. There are only two showers in the boathouse but plenty of hoses!
7) You are welcome to practice Wednesday afternoon and all day Thursday.
8) There will be water on the course, but no morning catering or lunches provided so be sure to get your food and caffeine fix before you arrive.
9) Traffic coming into Charleston on Friday morning can be heavy due to business and school commuters, so be sure to leave yourself some extra time (another good reason to carpool).
10) The launching ramps are in good shape, but there are sharp oyster shells in the vicinity of the ramps so be sure to wear foot protection while you launch and haul.
11) We will be storing dollies on the main hoist dock (to the north of the ramps) ONLY during the regatta, so please use the areas around the ramps and parking areas during practice times.
12) Those of you who have been “invited” to launch at JIYC, please contact your host for details.
13) The Dockmaster’s name is Ian Farley, please ask him if you need assistance. He wears a red polo shirt.
The members and staff of the Carolina Yacht Club are excited to have everyone coming and I look forward to seeing you.
Best regards,
Jerry Callahan

This will be a short write up because at the last minute I had to bail.  From the sound of things though, Beaufort came through with another great regatta!  Congratulations goes out to Eric Oetgen for winning the Full Fleet and Avery Fanning for taking 1st in the Radial Fleet.  For fleet specific scores and some action shots that really catch some competitors in that awkward moment, check out BYSC’s web site.  http://www.byscnet.com/Sailing/laser_d12/index.htm

Avery if your out there, do me a favor and send in a write up from winner’s circle to Laserdistrict12@gmail.com.

Easter in Charleston could not have been any better.  The weather was warm, the sea breeze came in, and the southern hospitality unmatched.  Friday, after a competitive day of racing under a falling tide in the harbor with 8-10 knot breeze, we were treated to cocktails and dinner in the Ballroom at the Carolina Yacht Club.  Saturday’s variable wind of 10-15 knots and changing tides required constant gear changing.  Racing was followed by a cocktail party and awards ceremony at the home of Sonny Meavers.  What a place, “recnetly” built in 1890 it overlooks the Battery and out onto the harbor, thanks Sonny!

A most sincere thank you goes out to both the E Scows and MC Scows for allowing us to be a part of their regatta, to the Carolina Yacht Club for hosting such a first class event,  and to the race committee for their patience with wind.  Finally we would like to thank Jerry Callahan, our Laser representative at CYC-SC, for helping coordinate this wonderful event.

Congratulations to David Loring and Nick Valente for their first place finishes in the Full and Radial fleets respectively.  We all look forward to reading David’s Regatta Report.

Next District 12 Championship Event is scheduled for May 1st-2nd at the Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club.  Registration is online so sign up by April 16th to save yourself $15.  Just follow this link http://registration.byscnet.com/laserd12.cfm?regatta=10laserd12

If you’re looking for something to do before then, Lake Norman is having their annual Sunfish/Laser Regatta April 17-18.  http://www.lakenormanyachtclub.com/content.aspx?page_id=87&club_id=716915&item_id=117357
