Just finishing up our weekend here in Wrightsvile Beach, NC. Christine got furloughed for 2 days for budget cuts in her county so we cashed in some sky miles and flew her over friday for our 10 year anniversary!! She spent the weekend running on the beach and cheering me on. This is the neatest beach town with great surfing, biking, a yacht club built in 1853, friendly people and awesome sailing.
Practiced in the ocean fri in 20-25 knots and huge swells, fun fun. Saturday was almost as windy and we got 3 races in in 15-22knots and I ended up the day with a 1,2,2, leading by 1 and 2 pts over 2 local guys. Sunday was supposed to be lighter but actually started out at 18 k and built to 25+ for the last race. I won the first race and the 2nd place guy finished 3rd so I was pretty comfortable to just stay with them for the last race and a 3rd – 5th would win it for me no problem. We 3 had always been seperating from the fleet so this was a safe tactic, so I thought. As the wind built, all of a sudden some of the other guys were mixing it up in the front , some ahead some just behind and to close if an accidental capsize happened….. I rounded the weather mark in 2nd behind the 3rd place guy and 2nd place guy back in 6th or 7th so just hang on.. huge puff rolled through and I did one of the hairiest death rolls ever, got it up quick and only lost a few places and still ahead of # 2 and just far enough back from #3 to lose. Gained a few boats back to weather to get back to 1st overall halfway up the beat and then….Laser vangs have changed and now are very adjustable, and when it’s windy you crank them on full to depower the sail, and you can play the vang through puffs. This purchase however keeps the boom very low to the deck and can be tough to get under in a tack. I usually try and ease slightly before a tack so as not to get hung up.. Forgot to do this as I tacked on the layline and capsized! Now there is a secondary issue of having the vang on fully as you right the boat and I lost 3 boats in this manouvre. Finally got going again and hiking like hell with my legs screaming with lactic acid, I passed 1 boat pretty quick as the breeze now seemed to be closer to 30knots. Getting close to now what appears is a shortened course finish line at the weather mark, with the 3rd place guy winning the race easily, I either catch 2 more boats or lose the regatta. 1 boat in front stalls in his tack to the finish and I got him, and my last boat to catch is to leward and should be able to tack and cross me on port to stay ahead but he does the same thing cause its so windy and the waves are so big it’s getting hard just to make forward progress. I need to tack twice quick to make the finish-ease the vang… tack, up to speed…tack and cross the finish line in 6th to just tie the 3rd place guy for 1st. I thought the tiebreak was who won the last race and I spent the next few hours thinking I lost the regatta until I was suprised at the awards ceramony that its the one with the most 1st’s, then the most 2nd’s. I win with 1,2,2,1,6 and his 3,1,2,3,1
Thanks Jeremy!
Good Luck to all D12 sailors headed to Canada, and safe travels.
