Carolina Sailing Club - NC Frostbite Report 12/16/07

Posted by Glenn on 18 Dec 2007 | Tagged as: News

WOW! What an awesome day!

We had 5 boats come out to play. Dillion, Taylor, Jack, Paul, and
myself braved the weather reports and made it out onto the water. We
easily could have gotten off 2-3 races in the time we were on the
water, but given the conditions we decided against trying to set marks
ourselves and just sailed around instead. Winds hovered in the 17-20
mph range with gusts up to the mid-20s. The power reaches were
insane, and if you could keep your boat flat the big gusts caused the
Lasers to rise up out of the water and FLY!

Given the lack of rescue boats and building winds we cut the day short
and were back on shore by 2 pm. Everyone came back intact and with a
big smile on their face. After we got back in, the wind continued to
build and we saw some of those 30 mph gusts that were promised.

Gearwise, nobody broke anything, and I think everyone reported that
their various combinations of wetsuits, fleece, and shells kept them
toasty warm. Dillion and Taylor got so warm they each decided to take
a dip (or maybe they were just washing their sails).

Thanks to everyone who came out to sail or watch,
Rob

Racing fodder is starting to trickle in.

CYC-NC fall series has rapped up with a 12 race series. 10 lasers participated, Martin Willard is 1st overall, Doug Sherwood (Cosecretary) 2nd, and Eddie Nowell in 3rd. Great sailing guys!

How about the rest of you guys? Send Doug or I a little writeup, and some pics we’ll be happy to post it on the D-12 site. Email is laserdistrict12@gmail.com

In other sailing news, Johnathan McKee former goldmedalist in the 470 (I think) is coskippering an Open 60 in a 2 man race around the world nonstop. Click on the link to follow along. http://www.barcelonaworldrace.com/ This is the first time an American has participated in a 2 man around the world race, more commonly an exclusive club to Europeans. Live vicariously through the teams!! Imagine them on big lasers! Also notice their speed in the lower right hand corner! Must be nice.
